Adopt a rescued Greyhound, they make great pets!

Please Consider Before Adopting

Adopting a greyhound, or any pet for that matter, is not a test drive or trial run. Adoption is a commitment for the life of the dog; it should not be viewed as a temporary situation. Weigh every conceivable possibility before adopting, and then weigh them again.

With greyhounds, there are certain realities that are unique to the breed and racetrack circumstance. Retired racers have only been trained to run fast, and nothing else. The transition from the racetrack or the farm to a “forever home” continues long after the dog is adopted. Living with any dog can try a person’s patience. Bonding isn’t instant. It can take time for a dog to become a loving, face-licking companion. As greyhounds are exposed to family routines, they will learn comfort and trust.

Dogs cost money: Besides vet exams and vaccinations, dogs may experience sickness or injury that will require trips to the Vet Emergency Clinic. Heartworm and flea preventative must be given monthly. Leashes, collars, coats, toys, treats and food all cost money. Be sure that your family is willing and able to afford a dog.

Changes ahead: Dogs have been returned to REGAP because the family relocates, parents divorce, babies are born, primary caretakers die or move out. Dogs ARE members of the family and shouldn’t be disposable. Those who return greyhounds often feel they’ve done the right thing, but they don’t see the dog’s angst and hurt.

If now doesn’t seem like the right time to adopt a dog, please wait. There will be a right time for you, after you’ve moved to the larger house or when the kids are a bit older or when you get the promotion and the extra money that comes with it. Please be patient. REGAP will still be here, with plenty of greyhounds and just the right match for you. We promise.
